Nurse

I care for you, but you can’t see my face
For as you breathe, behind a mask I hide
I long to hold you in my deep embrace

I’m forced to keep my distance, make a space
My natural instincts I must override
I care for you, but you can’t see my face

Would we be friends, in other time and place -
On sunny beach or verdant countryside?
I long to hold you in my deep embrace

You’re one of many, not the only case
But you’re the one to whom I feel allied
I care for you, but you can’t see my face

As viral load increases, gathers pace
I’m helpless as you watch me, terrified
I long to hold you in my deep embrace

Now others need me. You have lost your race.
My inner feelings I must put aside
I cared for you, but you can’t see my face
I longed to hold you in my deep embrace
