A Nurse’s Promise

By Andrea Waite

We have only just met
You don’t know me
But I will stay beside you as the night ticks by
I will try keep you safe till morning.
If the morning light you are not destined to see
I will make sure you are at peace when the angels come.
I will rejoice when the bad nights have past and you can go home
I will quietly weep if you are not a lucky one.
This I will do every night for as long as I am needed
And although your face may change
Becoming a different person as the nights roll by
I will care for you.

We have only just met
You don’t know me
People say I am a hero
But I am not
I am just the quiet whisper and the gentle hand
With a promise in my heart
That I will care for you
