The Ambulance Man

By Haileigh Baker

Not all heroes wear capes.
Some wear blue, some red
and a few black and white.
But the ambulance man, he wears green.

He’s not noticed, not seen
until he flashes past in a flurry of yellow and blue.
He’s essential but there’s not nearly enough of him
Not enough heroes

Stretched thin, a tightrope he treads
He keeps those he serves on the side of life.
His side; the frontline
Not a doctor or nurse but the right blend of in-between

Before pandemic struck, he fearlessly toed the line
Through 12 hour days
With a gentle hand and firm resolve
A moving bedside manner for a moving bed.

The critical first point of care
The power to save lives but also touch them too.
In good hands. Ones that have lost but
Do their best to save.

So thank you to the ambulance man
I couldn’t do what he can.
